ArtistCall School Residencies in Blackburn with Darwen:
Round 1 Call Deadline 1st March
ArtistCall represents an opportunity for artists from all types of creative discipline to apply online and be considered for 10 new residencies worth up to £10,000 each in up to 6 new or refurbished secondary schools based in Blackburn and Darwen, Lancashire. This is the first round of an ongoing series of ArtistCalls that are to be part of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s latest Building Schools for the Future programme.
The ArtistCall website allows artists to register interest, obtain information on the school briefs, and then upload optional information on their practice to their own private intranet area. This opportunity is being advertised nationally and locally, but specific artists will also be solicited and encouraged to apply. All artforms are encouraged, although it is suggested that interested artists read the provisional artistic visions listed for each school on the website. ArtistCall is looking to receive a first round of applications for the first tranche of schools by 1st March 2013, which it will then first moderate into an artist long-list.
Artist uploaded profiles will not be publicly visible initially, but will be shown to participating schools as a private ‘intranet’. Artists are also free to upload other information that will be more publicly visible in a blog-type format. These will both enable a curatorial panel drawn from Blackburn with Darwen’s Arts Development Services and up to 6 individual schools select 4 artists each for an initial enabling commission. This will form a short-listing stage, and will effectively allow artists to respond to each specifically developed school brief. This first commissioning stage will be worth just £300 per artist, and will allow them to develop initial proposals so a choice can be made for the full residencies on offer.
Thereafter, an agreed school selection panel will help chose up to 10 separate artists for the final commissioning of a residency or residencies. The numbers of and length of ArtistCall residencies are as flexible as the art forms under consideration, as long as the budgets listed are not exceeded. At this stage they are envisaged as being up to £10,000 each, plus a £3,000 maximum expenses and materials budget.
Please note that the individual school details listed on the website are for information only for the moment. As such, can we please ask artists not to contact Blackburn with Darwen Arts Service or the schools direct to discuss commissions at this initial stage. However, if you do have had any problems or queries, or want to make any other suggestions, please feel free to contact ArtistCall Arts Strategist Ian Banks using the online form, email or mobile as listed on the website:
