To buy a pre-owned item is to purchase a piece of history and to some extent reinforce the link between the past and the present. All manner of things continue to accrue in and disseminate from charity shops everywhere on a daily basis, although not as frequently or abundantly as they once did. There are constant and ever urgent calls for stock. In keeping with the economic times, charity shops, once seen as a quirky niche option to source the unexpected antique or vintage and designer-labelled goodies whilst still giving to a worthwhile cause, have now become a shopping necessity for many people who use them for a more general variety of relatively inexpensive, second-hand merchandise. The thrill of a bargain or that unique find can delight us all and some are entirely captivated by this aspect of the charity shopping experience; some embrace the recycling nature of it but in the main they are places more often used out of need than choice.
